Bio
A versatile musician with a “clear and gorgeous soprano" (Broadway World) and “exceptional acting” (Isthmus) skills, Cat Richmond is an accomplished, regional performer. She is at home in a variety of mediums from opera and musical theater, to straight plays and cabaret.
A frequent collaborator with the Madison Savoyards, she has most recently been seen in the title role of their production of Patience. In past seasons, she has performed in concerts with numerous excerpts from the Gilbert and Sullivan canon, and as Zorah in Ruddigore.
With Opera for the Young (OFTY), Cat has toured as Beauty in their production of Beauty and the Beast adapted from Grétry’s classical opéra comique, Zémire et Azor. and will rejoin OFTY for their 2024-2025 touring production of The Magic Flute as The Queen of the Night. Cat has also sung with the Harrower Opera Workshop as Die Königin der Nacht, from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.
In past seasons, Cat has been seen as Gretel in Capitol City Opera’s outreach production of Hansel and Gretel and Olympia with Opera Saratoga’s Opera to Go production of Pinocchio. Cat has also sung the role of Lucia with Capitol City Opera in their “Dinner and a Diva” production of Lucia di Lammermoor. Other favorite roles include the Lady with a Hand Mirror from Argento's Postcard from Morocco with Marble City Opera, and Pamina in Fresco Opera Theatre’s world premiere of The Queen of the Night.
In the realm of musical theater, Cat has performed with the Music Theater of Madison as The Woman in the contemporary musical, Who’s Your Baghdaddy by Pailet and The Mother in Monstersongs. Other past roles include Martha in Spring Awakening (Warehouse Theater), and Mary in HAIR (GLOW Lyric Theater).
In competitions, Cat has sung as a semi-finalist in the 2020 Harold Haugh Light Opera Vocal Competition in Jackson, MI, a finalist in the 2019 National Opera Association’s Carolyn Bailey and Dominick Argento Vocal Competition, and as a Young Artist semi-finalist in the Orpheus Vocal Competition.
A performer of contemporary music, Cat and fellow GSU students joined composer John Luther Adams in performing SILA: The Breath of the World. She and her colleagues also composed and performed original works with the Creative Music Ensemble at Georgia State University. Additionally, she presented pieces by David Diamond and Michael Pisaro.
In concert, Cat has sung as a young artist with the Charleston-based Piccolo Spoleto Festival and has performed as a soloist with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. As the soprano soloist for Handel’s Messiah, she has been featured with Northside Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA.
Cat has attended San Franscisco Conservatory, Georgia State University, and UW-Madison for master’s work, and holds three graduate degrees: an M.M. in Vocal Performance from GSU, a M.A. in Historical Musicology from UW-Madison, and a M.A. in Library and Information Studies from UW-Madison.
